I'm Nothing Without You

MCA yesterday was fabulous! We saw everything! They had some pretty amazing Jeff Koons sculptures, a Chuck Close of Cindy Sherman, an interactive exhibition with a performance artist mimicking all of our moves, a house made out of things from a landfill and the Comics show which was GREAT!

Monday Friday

Ugh today has been crazy! I slept through my alarm and left for my commute to school an hour after I usually leave. I leave around 6:30-6:45. See, living in the city I have to leave especially early so I miss the other morning commuters. I am usually really early for school and I get a prime parking spot and more time to work on reading/other stuff. Not today. I got to school right after my first class started so I had to walk in during. (Embarrasing) Then I realized I walked out of the house in a rush and forgot some stuff I had to turn in. My professor doesn't take late assignments so needless to say I was near tears. He drops the lowest grade so I'll be okay but now I have no safety net. And it's the first real week of classes. UGH

So, I had a discussion section today for a class that is usually at 11 but on Fridays at 12. I got out of that class thinking I had an hour break before the next one at 1. Nope, I walked in 30 minutes late because I realized after I went and bought lunch (forgot my meal at home in the rush out) that it was 1 and I was supposed to be in class. UGH

I finally got to leave school for the week and head home. I stopped to get gas and put some air in my tires. With these cold temps you have to make sure your tires stay well, you know. I was filling my tire up with air when I realized that the hose had a crack in it and what I was actually doing was letting the air out. UGH

I had to get back on the highway driving super slow since now my tire is flat and go to a different gas station to fill up with air because I have a long commute and cannot drive home with a flat. UGH

Needless to say, it feels like a Monday even though it's Friday. I guess it's true that "when it rains it pours" too. Shew, I'm glad that I am finally home cuddled up with my kitty. I'm planning on making some comfort food for dinner and reading a book. Hopefully nothing else bad happens! I hope this means my weekend is going to be super fun! Tomorrow I'm going to MCA with my boyfriend and a friend! To see this show featuring this lovely lady! Here are some sweet darling illustrations by her:

Sorry for the rant. I usually don't complain about the little things but today it just got to me. It will get better *deep breath* right?

Tree of Codes

I cannot wait for Jonathan Safran Foer's new book! It's called Tree of Codes. This is from the website:

Our early conversations with Jonathan Safran Foer about Tree of Codes started when Jonathan said he was curious to explore and experiment with the die-cut technique. With that as our mutual starting point, we spent many months of emails and phone calls, exploring the idea of the pages’ physical relationship to one another and how this could somehow be developed to work with a meaningful narrative. This led to Jonathan deciding to use an existing piece of text and cut a new story out of it. Having considered working with various texts, Jonathan decided to cut into and out of what he calls his “favourite book”: The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz.

As Jonathan began to carve out his story, we started doing our production homework and literally got turned down by every printer we approached – their stock line being “the book you want to make just cannot be made”. Thankfully, we found Die Keure in Belgium who relished the challenge of making a book with a different die-cut on every page.

Over a year of writing, cutting and proto-typing later, comes Tree of Codes, a haunting new story by Jonathan Safran Foer cut from Bruno Schulz’s words.

The book is as much a sculptural object as it is a work of masterful storytelling: here is an “enormous last day of life” that looks like it feels.

I love that he seems to be blurring the lines of collage art and novels. He is also using one of his favorite books to write a book himself. That is interesting!

I have read his other books and they are just so different and affecting from anything I've ever read. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is being made into a movie! It looks like it could be pretty good. Stephen Daldry is a favorite director of mine :) I'm sure that everyone has seen Everything is Illuminated by now. I love that movie!

Ishi and Deggers

We rescued two tiny baby turtles! They are so CUTE! The smallest one is the size of a quarter. They seem to be adjusting really well so far. At least they are doing better than the people who had them before. Sad. On the first day we put them in the sink with some purified water. They liked swimming around in a big space a lot!

The little one's name is Deggers (after Dave Eggers) and the other one is Ishi (after Kazuo Ishiguro).

Aren't they adorable? We just couldn't leave them behind!

b r r r r r r r

Today it was -21 with the wind chill at the coldest. ZOMG that's cold. Think about it like this, your freezer is supposed to be set to 0 degrees. Stand in front of your freezer and imagine what -21 feels like. Actually, don't do that.

As soon as I stepped outside this morning I fell on the ice in my driveway, twice, so I wasn't too jazzed about today but it got much better. I am staying inside all weekend if I can help it doing homework, noshing on delicious homemade banana bread, watching football (GO Bears!) and reading the rest of The Hunger Games books. I will emerge when it warms up, whenever that may be.

Dir. Mr. Hitchcock

I am so excited! I am taking a class devoted to Alfred Hitchcock movies. I was walking around in the bookstore buying my textbooks and saw a stack of books for a class that were all titles of Hitch's movies and a book about him. I had to get in it! If there is anything I'm super nerdy about it's Hitchcock movies! I have seen almost every one of his movies! I LOVE them! I'm obsessed! I even used to have a spreadsheet of the ones I need to see :)

Katniss

I just started reading The Hunger Games today because I needed a book to carry around on me during downtime at school. I like to read for fun during the stress and work I have to deal. It's a nice little escape.

I really like everything about the first book so far! I like the main character, Katniss a lot. I might start the second one tomorrow night if I'm lucky :)

winter breakdown

It is the last day of winter break for me. Tomorrow will be the start of my last semester in school until I decide to go further with grad school. Squee! So, I am going shopping today! First, IKEA to have lunch and walk around, Macy's to buy myself a new outfit for school with my gift card, and Barnes and Noble to use my gift card. I think I finally might get to see The Fighter today too!

I'm going to make the most of it because starting tomorrow, it's back to reading (not for fun) books and doing research again.
